In June 2002, AB Groupe submits an application for a national frequency. It offers several projects, including NT1, a general-interest television channel inspired by its older RTL9 and AB1. The channel was selected on June 10, 2003 and launched on March 31, 2005 at 6:01 pm with the other 13 free TNT channels.
At the end of 2006, the TF1 Group bought 1/3 of AB Groupe with the possibility of acquiring all of TMC and NT1. The TF1 group exercises this option in June 2009 and becomes, after validation by the CSA and the Competition Authority, owner of the 2 channels in March 2010, which remain attached to TMC Régie.
TF1 decided to make several changes, notably by upgrading NT1 to 16/9 in November 2010. It was the last DTT channel to switch to this format2. In addition, NT1 becomes the group's channel for young adults3.
On May 19, 2015, the channel launches its version in high definition4.
On May 26th of the same year, TF1, TMC, NT1 and HD1 gather their websites and become a unique site MYTF1.
On October 18, 2017, TF1 announces that NT1 will be renamed TFX5. Change became effective January 30, 2018 at 20:55.
